SPECIALIST WORKSHOP WITH JEREMY JAMES
July 4 – 8 2011

Electric Company presents a rare training opportunity for actors, performers and directors to work with Jeremy James, internationally acclaimed theatre artist, teacher and former actor in Ariane Mnouchkine’s legendary Le Théâtre du Soleil (Paris).

'...To be concrete, simple and true must always be present in the work of an actor. But we forget and our work becomes mechanical and predictable. So to return to this essential training is great.' - Laura Hernández, workshop participant, Teatro Solis, Montevideo, 2010

BODY, SPACE & THE IMAGINATION: making connections
This workshop aims to re-awaken connections between the body, breath and the imagination. Detailed physical training and movement analysis identify habits, attitudes and mannerisms in the performer that limit and complicate their expressive potential. The training develops an economy of movement where each gesture and breath is justified. The neutral mask of Jacques Lecoq and Amleto Sartori has become an extraordinary tool for such training and will be used to render the body visible and show how each movement, each breath, is powerfully expressive. With no character, no past, no emotion and no conflict, the mask helps the performer reach a state of calm, where they are able to receive and follow impulses without hesitation, judgment or obstacle. The training invites the performer to explore with the courage, curiosity and commitment essential for the development of their art.  To read a longer outline of the course, click here

‘…Rarely have I been tested by such exactitude, sometimes unyielding, and such a work on the body. The paths I have followed until now have not led me to this type of discovery…'  - Daphné de Quatre Barbes, Festival Internacional de Formación del Actor, Buenos Aires, 2008

‘…It was an extremely intense period of provocative work, thats resonance is still being felt…[It] has given me new tools and, more importantly, the energy to keep moving, to keep learning.’  - Genevieve Mooy, Critical Path, Sydney, 2011

‘…Jeremy’s work is absolutely precise. He has a trained eye to detect entrenched habits that stand in the way of an actor’s artistic development…’  - Andres Grevin, TEATRO TIMBRE 4, Buenos Aires, 2010

ABOUT JEREMY JAMES
Outlet-2011-2

‘The acting is of that sublime but unshowy order…where the precision of the actor’s technique would be awe-inspiring if it were not so casually presented…Jeremy James gives a performance of lovely grace…and wins one of the evening’s bona fide laugh lines…’  - Charles Isherwood, New York Times, 10 July 2009

Jeremy was a member of Ariane Mnouchkine’s renowned theatre ensemble, Le Théâtre du Soleil, for seven years. He performed in the company’s collectively-devised theatre and film projects, Le Dernier Caravansérail and Les Éphémères, receiving notable public and critical acclaim for his work at major theatres and festivals internationally, including Avignon, New York, Melbourne, Vienna, Athens, Berlin, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Berlin, Rome and Taipei. He trained with leading artists and master-teachers across Europe, including Monika Pagneux, Philippe Gaulier, Andrei Serban and founding members of theatre de complicite. He has received numerous awards, scholarships and residencies for his work in Australia and overseas.

Jeremy’s workshops are highly regarded internationally, and have been hosted by theatre companies and cultural organisations in Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Spain, UK and Uruguay. In 2010, Toronto's Volcano Conservatory, in partnership with WHYNOT Theatre, introduced Jeremy's rigorous approach to actor and ensemble training to eastern Canada. Electric Company Theatre is excited to present this training opportunity to Vancouver artists, while hosting Jeremy and Toronto director Philip McKee for a creative development residency. Their new creation, Brothers, will premiere at the Summerworks Festival in August, before Jeremy returns to South America to direct projects in Brazil and Argentina.

ABOUT LE THÉÂTRE DU SOLEIL

Outlet-2011-4

During the past 45 years the company has become one of the most celebrated ensembles in Europe, and Ariane Mnouchkine one of the most important directors internationally. The company’s development is marked by an endless inquiry into the place of theatre in society today and the role it has to play. Political and human questions, the theatrical re-visioning of history, the investigation of great theatrical forms and the ethics and politics of collaboration have been recurrent themes in the work of the company. Canadian audiences were stunned at Montreal's Festival TransAmériques with the scale, audacity and originality of Tambours sur la Digue (2001) and Les Atrides (1993). read more
