The Score
On the eve of the Human Genome Organization’s world conference in Vancouver, The Score opened with unprecedented buzz and played to full houses throughout its run (click here for website).
Commissioned by Dr. Michael Hayden of Vancouver's own Centre for Molecular Medicine & Therapeutics, the play grew out of our research on the researchers who run a laboratory that rides on the cutting edge of discovery.
The spheres of science and art are fused in this exciting experiment. The Score explores the exploding world of genetics and is sure to capture the public’s imagination.
The Score is a timely and important play that explores the human elements and implications of the revolutionary technology of genetics and the human genome project.
The Score tells the story of Dr. Magnusson, a geneticist at the helm of a small but groundbreaking laboratory, which is racing towards a crucial discovery. But the clock is also ticking on the geneticist herself, who is forced to confront her own genetic history and the possibility of a devastating disease that threatens her career, her lab, and her life.
Robert Gardiner’s award-winning set design features a series of moving screens which frame the action in apertures of various shapes and sizes. Paralleling the fractured nature of Magnusson’s life, the set shifts and moves, creating a cinematic depiction of her “film noir” nightmares.
Stylistically innovative, the playful nature of the show allows audiences to engage in what is often perceived as an impenetrable subject area. The topical story, with it’s humour, compassion, and drama, transform the ideas explored in the specific world of the laboratory into universal themes of identity, freedom and creation.
Through the partnership with Screen Siren Pictures Inc, Electric Company has transformed The Score into a 90 minute screenplay for CBC's performing arts program Opening Night.
