Artist Workshop: The Director/Composer Relationship

A workshop for theatre directors with Award-winning theatre composer Joelysa Pankanea.

As a director envisioning a work of theatre, have you ever found yourself asking these questions:

  • Do I need a composer or sound designer for this project? Which one, both?
  • What does the composer require from me in our first meeting to get started?
  • Where is sound placed and who decides this?
  • The sound is not supporting the vision, how can I ask for something different?

Mulit-award winning theatre composer, Joelysa Pankanea, has created an innovative new workshop for directors in which she addresses these topics and answers many of the questions we have around the roles of sound designers, composers, and musical directors. Learn how the arc of sound is created for a score, how to get what you need from your sound designer, and discuss some tips and tricks for better communication. Joelysa’s workshop offers a safe and interactive space to pose questions and get the information you need to build beautiful relationships with your sound department. Let’s get together and discuss the ways to achieve better sounding, fully integrated music into our projects, together.

To create a safe space for open dialogue and sharing between participants, workshop discussions will be kept strictly confidential.

-This workshop will take place in Zoom with a maximum capacity of five people per workshop–
