New Play in Development: The Crows Transcending
A powerful new play in development by Kwantlen playwright and storyteller Joseph Dandurand.
Set between the caves of ancestral memory and the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the work follows four characters—Pryer, Miss Emily, Kalicee, and Valet—who are bound together by trauma, addiction, and visions that connect them to the spirit world.
Haunted by crows—symbols of survival and transformation—the characters confront the violence and loss inflicted on Indigenous peoples through residential schools, systemic neglect, and the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit people. In their search for justice, they embody both vengeance and ceremony, moving between ritual, myth, and the harsh realities of street life.
Through stark imagery, West Coast song and dance, and unflinching dialogue, The Crows Transcending offers a visceral journey into survival, memory, and retribution. Dandurand weaves a story that is at once contemporary and timeless, demanding that audiences bear witness to lives too often erased, and to the resilience of spirit that transcends violence and death.
Electric Company Theatre is proud to support the progress of this important new work through a script development workshop and reading at Left of Main.
